I know it's not cool to kiss your dogs on the mouth but I do.
I know it's not cool to curse like a hooker
or wear black all the time or drink too much
or mix your cocktails or talk about people or use chemicals or spend too much money or drive too fast
or not wash your hands or listen to disco
or use god as a curse or with a lower case g
or eat butter or low fat milk or products with canola oil
or hate coconut oil or like fur or kill chickens
or never wash your car or tell people what’s up
or not be able to cry or cry too much or flirt with men
or flirt with women or play music too loud
or laugh too loud or any of those things but whatever.
The table’s set.
Still waiting for the missing dish from the dishwasher.
In Puerto Rico we went out for thanksgiving.
In Albuquerque I ate with the maid and my dog.
In queens we went to my aunts
and all the cousins played in the basement.
Hide and seek and kissing as sport.
In California we went to Eva's until she moved
then we went to Richard and Sherry’s.
Sometimes everyone came to our house.
Carl would mow the lawn.
Always turkey and stuffing, green beans and mashed potatoes,
pumpkin pie and salad, rolls and butter, cranberry sauce and wine.
Cooking all day.
Finish eating in 20 minutes.
Clean up for 2 days.
Sharing what we are grateful for.
Family, friends, health, and love.
her smile, good teeth, dimples deep, eyes that squint,
eyes that sparkle, eyes that see me, his voice, sexy deep,
soothing me to sleep, shaking me from dreams,
their car that picked me up from the airport,
that dropped me at the hospital,
that took me across the island, that we sang in,
that we kissed in, made love in, laughed in.
I know it's cool to say family, friends, health and love
